Abstract

This paper explores nine wine zones of Chile based on the country's appellation of origin legislation. In pursuing this discussion, two key themes emerge: the influence of rainfall and temperature. It is these two themes that dictate the suitability of the various grape varieties used throughout the country. Equally, the geography of Chile, the influence of the Andes and the cooling currents of the Pacific also influence rainfall and temperature throughout the nine zones commented on in this paper. The zones that are commented on are based on latitude from north to south and are similar to the country's political and administrative regions. However, from the perspective of vine cultivation they do not reflect key technical considerations such as climate and soil in any real detail. This paper expands the comments on the zones in order to comment on a range of technical considerations, vital for effective vine cultivation.

Abstract

The tourism and hospitality industry has been one of the most important in the world for decades, being essential for the economic, social, and cultural growth of the communities in which it is present. Both its importance in the world economy and its resilience have been highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the strict measures taken to combat it; despite suffering one of its worst years ever seen, it is still expected to continue growing in the future, and with this, to continue evolving. This industry cannot meet growth and evolution expectations to return to the same approach as prepandemic times. It is necessary for businesses focused on the sector to adopt a new intercultural approach to providing these services. In this way, by adapting the services to tourists, they have a better experience and thus, considering all the characteristics involved in the provision of tourist services, it is possible to achieve what is known as sustainable tourism, encompassing both the need of consumers to be understood as well as to consider the care of ecosystems and local workers. The present work seeks to identify the influence of an intercultural and sustainable approach in the choice of tourism destinations and companies, influencing the growth of tourism businesses focused on hospitality services. For this, literary research was carried out, and the case study of the company Airbnb and its implementation of an intercultural approach is presented.

Abstract

This chapter considers the process of entrepreneurial activity to deploy financial technologies (fintech) through mandate-specific new companies in Latin America. We deal with important historical issues such as defining the term, establishing temporal and industrial activity boundaries, positioning this particular process within other organizational forms typical of the region, the role of women, and other relevant issues such as the modernization of retail payments and personal lending. A central question is whether fintech start-ups have had a “scissor” effect in the entrepreneurial process of Latin America: at the base of the pyramid (i.e., reducing frictions to support overall entrepreneurial activity, increasing financial inclusion, etc.) and near the top (by creating new business leaders). As a result, this chapter provides an initial assessment of gender disparities and barriers enabling women entrepreneurs in the fintech ecosystem.

Abstract

Purpose: This chapter analyzes the policies of immigration control implemented in Mexico in 2014 to deter the migration of Central Americans to the United States, and their impact on Central American youth migrants.

Methods: This chapter draws from three pools of data: (1) participant observation and interviews conducted with minor migrants in Mexico from 2015 to 2019; (2) Mexican and US government data on detentions and deportations of Central American minor migrants; and (3) publicly available information on Mexican and Guatemalan government programs and media campaigns targeted at addressing the migration of Central American minor migrants.

Findings: This chapter posits that the policies of migrant detention and deportation implemented in Mexico in 2014 turned the entire country into a borderland for Central Americans. These policies expanded the areas of migrant surveillance, detention, and deportation beyond Mexico’s traditional border regions, which, in turn, made youth migrants’ journeys through Mexico more precarious and prone to violence.

Research implications: This chapter examines the impact of immigration and border control policies implemented in Mexico and anti-immigration propaganda on Central American youth, and it demonstrates how Mexico has been converted into an expanded US border territory in an attempt to prevent migrants from reaching the United States’ physical borderland.

Value: This chapter analyzes the impact of US-led detention and deportation policies aimed at Central American migrants throughout Mexico, rather than just in the traditional border regions. These relatively novel policies are at the forefront of immigration control and warrant special attention.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to inspire research at the intersection of marketing and mental health. Marketing academics have much to offer – and much to learn from – research on consumer mental health. However, the context, terminology and setting may prove intimidating to marketing scholars unfamiliar with this vulnerable population. Here, experienced researchers offer guidance for conducting compelling research that not only applies marketing frameworks to the mental health industry but also uses this unique context to deepen our understanding of all consumers.

Design/methodology/approach

Common concerns about conducting marketing research in the area of mental health were circulated to researchers experienced working with vulnerable populations. Their thoughtful responses are reported here, organized around the research cycle.

Findings

Academics and practitioners offer insights into developing compelling research questions at the intersection of marketing and mental health, strategies to identify relevant populations to research and guidance for safe and ethical research design, conduct and publication.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first instructional paper to provide practical advice to begin and maintain a successful research agenda at the intersection of mental health and marketing.
